TOWT aims to launch the first of these ships by June next year. The company claims the ships can sail at an average speed of 10.5 knots and is able to complete a voyage between the French Port of Le Havre and the US' New York within 13 days running entirely on wind energy.

At COP27, TOWT said it has set an ambitious target to have a fleet of over 500 sail ships, with a total cargo capacity of 1.2 million mt.

TOWT has already received orders to construct four of these ships.
