Although the immediate impact that these small-scale electric vessels will have on global greenhouse gas emissions might be limited, the deal holds significance as it provides crucial technical and operational insights that can inform the development of larger-scale electric vessels in the future.
The Toronto Ferries will each be 50 metres long, with one ferry dedicated to transporting passengers and vehicles, while the other will carry passengers and bicycles. They will operate between the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal in downtown Toronto and the Toronto Islands.
Designed by Quebec-based naval architect Concept Naval, the ferries will be constructed at Damen’s Galati shipyard in Romania. The company has not disclosed when these ferries will be delivered.
