Methanol-ready means that the vessels will not be capable of running on methanol upon delivery, but they will have the option to be retrofitted for methanol propulsion in the future. This implies they will likely run on fossil-based marine fuels upon delivery.
One 8,258-TEU container ship will be built at the Yangzijiang shipyard in China, with delivery expected in 2027. The remaining four 9,200-TEU vessels will be constructed at the Dalian shipyard in China, with three scheduled for delivery in 2027 and one in 2028.
All five vessels will be equipped with open-loop scrubbers, allowing them to burn cheaper HSFO while complying with the IMO 0.50% sulphur cap.
The company has also secured a multi-year charter agreement for all the vessels ordered.
With this latest order, Danaos Corporation has a total of 16 container ships under construction with an aggregate capacity of 129,819 TEUs.
