Danish duo to build second methanol-fuelled offshore vessel
Danish energy company Ørsted and offshore shipping company ESVAGT have agreed to build a second dual-fuel service operation vessel (SOV) that can run on methanol.

The vessel will serve as “a sister vessel to the world’s first methanol-powered service operation vessel (SOV), which was announced in 2022.” It can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 4,500 mt/yr when operating on e-methanol, Ørsted claims.
The SOV is anticipated to be launched in 2026 and will be deployed in Ørsted’s UK East Coast Hub on a 10-year contract.
Ørsted expects to supply e-methanol produced from renewable energy and biogenic carbon for both SOVs from its own e-methanol facility - FlagshipONE - in Sweden.
This move is in line with the Ørsted's goal to "become carbon-neutral in its energy generation and own operations by 2025."
