Danish Shipping backs EU’s 2040 climate target
Danish Shipping, the shipowners' association, has commended the European Commission's proposal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 90% by 2040, with shipping included in the target scope.

This significant target comes after the EU in 2023 adopted a set of European Commission (EC) proposals to achieve a minimum 55% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030, in comparison to 1990 levels.
The progression from the 55% reduction by 2030 to the ambitious 90% reduction by 2040 marks a substantial effort towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The Danish government has also supported the EC’s recommendation, becoming the first EU member state to do so.
Danish Shipping has urged the Belgian EU Presidency to support the EU’s climate target set for 2040 and “prioritize the work on developing the concrete regulations needed to make the impressive 90 percent target a reality.”
The shipowners’ association said that implementation of such climate targets was required to reach the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) ambitious goal of net zero by 2050.
“I hope that the EU's high level of ambition and its work on shaping the necessary regulations can help push the work in the IMO forward, so we can establish global climate regulations for shipping,” said Nina Porst, director of climate, environment, and safety at Danish Shipping.
