Danish Shipping recommends global green fuels certification system
Shipowners’ association Danish Shipping recommended a series of ways to certify green fuels and transport carbon dioxide (CO2) to the Danish government.

It is crucial for global shipping companies to reach a consensus on what qualifies as “green” when they bunker vessels with green fuels in the future, said the organisation.
Danish Shipping has urged the government to:
- Roll-out clear and robust schemes to certify green fuels for international shipping that meet requirements for measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) and FuelEU Maritime
- Devise a global certification methodology
- Designate bodies to carry out certifications both inside and outside the EU
Citing examples of existing discrepancies, the shipbuilders’ association pointed out that the parameters to distinguish between green and grey methanol are flawed. These are produced from renewable and fossil sources, respectively.
“That is why it is important to get a certification in place - not only in the EU but globally,” it further added.
The organisation has also urged the Danish government devise a legal framework for cross-border transportation of CO2 between EU countries, which the government has accepted.
“The [Denmark] government is responsive to the concerns of the business community and accepts the proposals from the Rules Forum well and constructively,” said Jacob K. Clasen, chief executive officer of Danish Shipping.
