DNV launches emissions reporting project for offshore wind installation vessels

March 1, 2023

Classification society DNV is partnering with energy and operation companies to launch a monitoring and reporting framework for assessing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the offshore wind installation sector.

DNV says a framework is needed because the offshore wind generation sector is forecast to swell towards 2050, and that this requires a massive build-up of installation vessels, which in turn will result in higher emissions.

Current emissions reporting metrics only track vessels engaged in transport work and not those used in the offshore wind installation segment.

“With the EMRED JIP, we are working with the industry leaders in this segment to provide a framework that will enable contractors and operators to document vessel performance and more easily set reduction targets,” says Henning Carlsen, smart class manager of offshore classification at DNV.

The aim is for vessels to be compared on emissions matrices so that efficiencies can be calculated. This will be helpful in developing targeted regulations to reduce emissions.

Through 2023, DNV will develop metrics and baselines to build a set of indicators that will enable standardisation. The programme will primarily focus on vessels engaged in foundation installations (floating and jack-up), wind turbine installations and cable laying.
