Dutch consortium to develop hydrogen-fuelled cargo vessel
A consortium led by Dutch maritime company Nederlandse Innovatie Maatschappij (NIM) has launched a project to design, build and demonstrate a hydrogen-powered cargo vessel.

The vessel will operate with a cryogenic hydrogen storage and bunkering system to safely handle and store liquid hydrogen at extremely low temperatures. Its primary propulsion will come from a hydrogen fuel cell system supported by batteries.
To enhance energy efficiency and reduce hydrogen consumption, the ship will also operate with wind-assisted propulsion and a waste heat recovery system.
Managed by Van Dam Shipping, it will operate in the North Sea and beyond, according to NIM.
The project is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
Other members of the consortium include TNO, MARIN, the University of Twente, Cryovat, EnginX, Encontech, and classification society RINA.
