Both parties intend to launch the first methanol-powered tugboat - Damen RSD-E Tug 2513 - in Europe and are currently scouting for the “the potential harbour that will be best matched to its operational profile.”
The vessel will be equipped with electric propulsion system as well.
The companies believe that “electric and methanol-fueled propulsion systems currently offer the best and most available route to achieve” the transition to cleaner vessels operating in the harbour and towage sector.
“We are already building RSD-E Tugs 2513 for stock and a number will be available for delivery in 2024/25,” Damen Shipyards’ chief executive Arnout Damen said.
The duo believes these vessels will “set a new standard for all its subsequent newbuilds.”
