The design concept, Aquarius Eco Handymax II, has sail-assisted propulsion and solar power system. It was approved by Japanese classification society ClassNK last year.
Econ Marine Power's focus has been to use various alternative power sources with energy saving devices to help achieve zero emissions targets, says Greg Atkinson, president & chief technology officer at Eco Marine Power.
The company has recently applied for patent registration of this concept.
Some of the technologies in the design will be deployed and evaluated this year, and more deployed thereafter, the company says.
