The planned infrastructure will include “integrated” supply facilities to serve ships transiting the Red Sea and Suez Canal.
Itochu has not disclosed where the green ammonia for this agreement will be sourced, but it is already working with multiple producers to secure volumes from their respective projects worldwide.
The Japanese conglomerate has committed to offtake around 300,000 mt/year from L&T Energy GreenTech’s project in India and 600,000 mt/year from ACWA Power’s project in Egypt. It is also working with Hive Hydrogen to explore green ammonia production in Nelson Mandela Bay, along Algoa Bay in South Africa.
The Egypt-Japan collaboration extended beyond ammonia.
SCZONE partnered with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to study demand and feasibility for green hydrogen bunkering in Suez, while talks with Sumitomo focused on green hydrogen production, export and bunkering prospects in the region.
