German energy infrastructure investment firm DAI Infrastruktur and energy tech firm Siemens Energy have set out to build a plant with a production capacity of 1.65 million mt/year of green ammonia produced from renewable energy sources. Production is scheduled to start in 2028.

The plant will be located next to the Suez Canal and within East Port Said’s harbour. Bunkering will be offered to green ammonia-fuelled vessels passing the Suez Canal.

Co-founder of DAI, Ioannis Papassavvas, said that the plant’s location “...will help the maritime industry in bunkering their vessels as well as shipping the valuable green ammonia to off takers within Europe."

Siemens Energy will supply electrolysers, auxiliary plant systems and other equipment. Both companies will also collaborate on engineering work during the plant's development stage.

The green ammonia will be sold to German and European off-takers, with the bulk to be consumed as marine fuel.

Ammonia is considered green when it is produced through renewable and carbon-free processes. According to ship classification firm Bureau Veritas, "Zero-carbon Ammonia’s key advantage is its status as a zero-carbon fuel when produced renewably, enabling ships to eliminate CO2 emissions."
