Biofuels are typically produced from renewable organic materials and can reduce vessels' net CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuels, depending on the blend ratio of biofuels to oil.

ENI claims it has expertise in producing biofuels using vegetable raw materials, animal waste and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). It says biofuels are critical to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

“Thanks to the use of biofuel, Saipem will potentially be able to reduce emissions by around 550,000 Tonnes of CO2eq per year, equal to 60% of its total annual Scope 1 emissions," the companies said.

In a separate development, DB Schenker struck a deal with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) this month to use 12,000 mt of biofuel for its cargo movements to reduce emissions.
