The plant has a production capacity of 320,000 mt/year, with exports set to begin by the fourth quarter of this year, the company said. It plans to scale up output to 1.5 million mt/year by 2028.
Green ammonia is produced by combining green hydrogen with nitrogen, using renewable electricity.
The new facility integrates a green hydrogen plant powered by wind and solar energy, which drives both the electrolysers and the ammonia synthesis process. “Surplus” green electricity is converted into liquid nitrogen and stored in an on-site air-separation unit, the company explained.
The plant has received a renewable ammonia certification from classification society Bureau Veritas, confirming that the ammonia produced uses 100% green hydrogen as feedstock.
Envision Energy has also signed a long-term offtake agreement with Japanese conglomerate Marubeni. The partnership, it said, will help “accelerate” green ammonia uptake in shipping and other sectors.
In 2024, Marubeni partnered with Norwegian shipping firm Solvang to jointly operate an ammonia carrier for global transport. But it has not confirmed whether ammonia from Envision Energy's plant will be transported to international hubs for bunkering.
