Equisera and VertomCory explore bio-methanol as fuel for shipping
Waste-to-gas technology developer Equisera and maritime services group VertomCory are looking into producing bio-methanol from UK’s biogenic waste, with the country’s coastal shipping as the first target market.

Equisera’s technology uses supercritical water reforming to convert wet biogenic waste into clean gases like hydrogen, biomethane and captured carbon dioxide, along with biochar. These gases can then be processed into bio-methanol for bunkering.
Equisera said it is working with specialist partners to combine these processes into one system.
VertomCory’s Group CEO Peter Wilson said the company will contribute its shipping, logistics and customer know-how to help build a UK supply chain for low carbon marine fuel.
The companies see coastal and short-sea shipping as the place to start. These ships run on regular schedules and call at a limited number of UK ports.
Equisera said its next step is to show how the full process works at scale, including its cost, reliability and lifecycle emissions.
