Classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) has granted approval in principle (AiP) to Greek manufacturer ERMA FIRST for its shore power connector design.

The high-voltage power connector can easily fit inside a 40-foot container. It can be stored onboard a vessel for shore power connectivity or installed in port areas. It is recommended for vessels such as container ships, tankers and cruise vessels, which have higher shore power demand.

The power connector allows vessels to connect to different configurations of shore power systems.

The connector has been designed for a specific maximum electrical load capacity that each vessel requires. “This provides maximum flexibility for access to shore power while at berth,” ERMA FIRST said.

Shore-to-ship power or “cold ironing” is an electrical power supply provided to ships when they are docked at ports. Instead of running the engines onboard to power essential systems while docked at ports, shore power facilities allow ships to connect to the local electrical grid. This helps in the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and particulate matter. It also cuts down on noise pollution in port areas caused by heavy machinery and generators.
