ETFuels partners with European duo to build e-methanol plant in the US
US green energy company ETFuels has partnered with UK-based chemical firm Johnson Matthey and Belgian engineering company John Cockerill to develop a 120,000 mt/year e-methanol project in Texas, US.

Under the collaboration, John Cockerill will supply 210 megawatt (MW) of its pressurized alkaline electrolyser units and provide technical services for a green hydrogen facility to be built in Texas. Johnson Matthey will contribute its e-methanol technology and methanol synthesis catalyst for the project.
The facility, spanning 22,000 acres, will produce 120,000 mt/yr of e-methanol using co-located 500 MW of renewable energy combined with biogenic CO2.
The financial investment decision for this first project is anticipated in 2026, with construction set to begin by or before 2027. The e-methanol produced will support decarbonisation efforts in industrial sectors such as shipping and aviation.
“With FuelEU regulation incentivizing early adoption of e-fuels, particularly for shipping, ETFuels’ e-methanol… offers a compelling solution,” ETFuels stated.
“E-methanol is fast emerging as a key game-changer solution for decarbonizing the global shipping industry in the years ahead. It’s a heavy industry with a large footprint, and lower-carbon fuels will be vital in reducing its impact,” Alberto Giovanzana, Johnson Matthey’s managing director, added.
