The European Commission is allocating €3.6 billion ($4.04 billion) to 41 clean energy projects under the EU Innovation Fund.

The projects cover a number of sectors - including renewable hydrogen, low- and zero-emission fuel production and carbon capture and storage (CCUS), which are of particular interest to the shipping industry

One of them is the H2Sines.RDAM initiative, which will investigate using liquid hydrogen carriers (LH2) to transport renewable hydrogen from Portugal to the Netherlands. It is a collaboration between ENGIE, Shell, Vopak, and Anthony Veder.

Under the project, a 400 megawatts (MW) electrolyser and hydrogen liquefaction and storage facility will be built at the Port of Sines - a deep water port in Portugal. The plant will produce and liquefy green hydrogen using renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. Liquified hydrogen will be transported to a Rotterdam terminal using fuel cells.

About €1.2 billion ($1.35 billion) EC allocation will go to 13 projects focused on renewable hydrogen.

It also granted €800 million ($898 million) to 11 electrolyser and electric battery manufacturing projects, and €250 million ($290 million) to 9 pilot projects focused on CCUS and e-fuels.

Last November, the European Commission announced a third call for projects as part of the EU Innovation Fund. This fund is intended to promote innovation within the EU. There were 239 submissions in this round, according to the Commission.
