Everllence completes Type Approval Test for ammonia dual-fuel engine
German engine maker Everllence (formerly MAN Energy Solutions) has successfully completed the Type Approval Test (TAT) for its ammonia dual-fuel engine at its Research Centre Copenhagen (RCC).

A TAT is a formal verification process that confirms a system complies with the required technical, safety, and performance standards before entering commercial service.
“It confirms the Everllence B&W ME-LGIA as ready for on-board installation and is the last test before actual sea and gas trials,” Bjarne Foldager, Everllence’s head of Two-Stroke Business, said. The testing programme was conducted between 10-12 June, under the supervision of eight classification societies.
The engine is based on its proven dual-fuel Liquid Gas Injection (LGI) technology and the Diesel combustion principle, a combination that has already accumulated several hundred thousand operating hours in service, according to Everllence.
The Diesel principle uses a small amount of pilot fuel that ignites in highly compressed hot air, while the LGI system injects the main fuel at high pressure, enabling the engine to operate on both gas and conventional fuels.
“The TAT is also important in relation to maturing IMO ammonia regulations…” as “the first ammonia-driven ships, which are expected to operate at sea during 2026, will act as compelling input for the development of these guidelines,” Ole Pyndt Hansen, senior vice president, head of Two-Stroke R&D, Everllence, said.
