Everllence to equip Vale-chartered vessels with methanol engines
German engine maker Everllence said it will supply ten methanol dual-fuel engines for vessels under construction in China’s Qingdao Beihai shipyard.

The engines will be installed on very large ore carriers (VLOCs) ordered by Chinese shipping firms Shandong Shipping and Bohai Ocean Shipping.
The VLOCs will be able to run on methanol, as well as conventional marine fuels, and time-chartered by Brazilian mining company Vale. They will carry iron ore from Brazil to China, according to Everllence.
The engines will be accompanied with exhaust gas recirculation-turbocharger cut-out (EGRTC) system for IMO Tier III NOx compliance.
The EGRTC technology reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from ship engines by recirculating part of the exhaust gases back into the combustion chamber.
It also lowers the oxygen concentration and combustion temperature, which in turn reduces the amount of harmful NOx formed and ensures that the vessels can operate in regulated waters while keeping NOx emissions very low.
“In a multi-fuel future, we expect methanol to figure prominently across all vessel segments and these newbuildings will be capable of trading carbon-neutrally when powered by green methanol,” said Bjarne Foldager, head of two-stroke business at Everllence.
