The EU has awarded €18.8 million ($20 million) through its Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) fund.

The project aligns with the new EU regulations, slated to come into force in 2030, which require ships over 5,000 gross tonnage to connect to onshore power while moored.

Each of the four ports involved will allocate the funds in different ways to reduce CO2 emissions from moored vessels through OPS. They target an overall CO2 emission reduction of up to 35,000 mt/year through this project.

Sweden’s Port of Gothenburg plans to build a high-voltage substation at its container terminal to support an OPS facility for container ships to curb CO2 emissions by at least 5,600 mt annually. The port will receive around €10 million ($11 million) of the funding from the project," says Julia Christensson, Grants Manager at the Port of Gothenburg.

The Ports of Stockholm authority in Sweden will establish an OPS facility for container ships to connect to green electricity at the new Stockholm Norvik Port, which serves both container and RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) vessels, by 2027. This electricity connection will be available to all shipping companies on equal terms. The facility will feature a mobile container dispenser that will service two berths, the port authority said.

Germany’s Port of Bremerhaven will receive funding of €5.23 million ($6 million) to set up the OPS facility. This corresponds to around 50% of the cost of a single shore power connection, said Kristina Vogt, the senator for economic affairs, ports and transformation.

The Port of Aarhus in Denmark targets cutting CO2 emissions by 1,567 mt annually through project funding by setting up an OPS facility. The port of Aarhus received €5.29 million ($6 million) via the project.
