The vessel can run on LNG, e-LNG, liquified biogas (LBG), bio-diesel, e-diesel and gasoil, Furetank says. With some modifications to the engine it will also be able to run on methanol and ammonia in the future, Furetank chief executive Lars Höglund says. The piston and cylinder head needs to be changed, which Wartsila will supply.

Furetank currently operates four multi-fuelled tankers, out of the total orderbook of 11 tankers. The most recent is expected to be delivered in 2024 and Furetank has taken options for additional vessels.

The latest tanker also has a battery that can connect to shore power while in port.

Data from shipping classification society DNV suggests that around 416 dual-fuelled LNG vessels on order for delivery from 2024. The global LNG fleet has expanded by nearly 60% over the past two years, with 304 vessels currently in operation.
