The inland container vessel FPS Waal will be retrofitted completely. The vessel’s diesel engine will be replaced by a modular propulsion system that consists of electric motors, hydrogen tanks, a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell system and a battery system.
The vessel will have a fuel cell capacity of 1.2 megawatt (MW) and cargo carrying capacity of 200 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers.
The reftrofit is expected to be completed by five months from the time of arrival at Holland Shipyards yard. Holland Shipyards is currently in the final stage of retrofitting FPS’ first inland container vessel - the FPS Maas.
Upon completion, the vessel will be deployed to transport containers on the Rotterdam-Duisburg route on the Rhine.
