The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD), and classification services provider DNV commissioned a study to determine the feasibility of ammonia bunkering in Singapore last year.

The completion of this study has pushed Singapore another step closer to commence pilot tests for ammonia bunkering. The success of these trials will mark a significant milestone for the shipping industry, GCMD says.

The report has identified three sites at the port to conduct ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering trials.

Singapore-based GCMD says these trials will be conducted on ammonia carriers at the three chosen sites as ammonia-powered ships are not operational as yet.

GCMD's study also provides a framework and guidelines for safe handling and bunkering of ammonia, which the non-profit organisation claims can be “applicable to piloting ammonia bunkering at ports elsewhere.”
