GoodFuels delivered 140 mt of 100% biofuel, without blending with conventional marine fuels, to AIDAprima in Rotterdam. This biofuel is comprised of used cooking oil and animal waste fats. The company claims that biofuel can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 80-90% compared to conventional marine fuels and that no engine modification is required to use it.
GoodFuels’ chief executive Dirk Kronemeijer believes that “sustainable biofuels are an immediately available sustainability solution for a range of segments in the global fleet.
Exploration of biofuels has been gaining traction among shipowners to reduce near-term carbon emissions as these can be used as drop-in fuels.
Among the flurry of biofuel-related developments, Swedish shipping line Furetank completed a trial run with a biofuel blend supplied by Norwegian energy company Equinor last month. Also, Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) completed a trial run of a biofuel blend supplied by marine fuel supplier ExxonMobil Marine.
