The project involves Finnish shipbuilders Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC), ferry operator Viking Line, DC fast charging solutions provider Kempower, and Abo Akademi University, They will jointly work to decarbonise the Turku-Stockholm Sea route operated by Viking Line by 2027.
RMC and Kempower are developing energy-efficient solutions to operate ships and charge electric vehicles on board. Finland-based Abo Akademi will act as a research partner in the project.
Fuel for the zero-carbon transport will be manufactured locally in Southwest Finland.
RMC, Abo Akademi, and Kempower will get funding from Business Finland, the Finnish government's business development organization, while Viking Line is backed by the Government of Aland.
RMC’s interim chief executive Mika Laurilehto says the project is scalable for other routes.
