Cleanergy Solutions Namibia is a joint venture (JV) between Belgian shipping company CMB.Tech and Namibia-based Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group.

The facility will produce green hydrogen for the transport sector and industrial applications, with rail and maritime sectors set to be served from 2026.

The production facility features a solar-powered, off-grid electrolyser to produce green hydrogen. It also features a refuelling station for hydrogen-powered vehicles and industrial applications.

Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis process using electricity generated from renewable sources like wind and solar.

Germany has provided grant funding via its Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) to the project.

The facility will also have a Hydrogen Academy to train Namibians in hydrogen technologies.

Notably, a multi-purpose hydrogen dual-fuel harbour vessel, currently being built in the Netherlands, will be deployed in Walvis Bay port later next year. The vessel will use the locally produced green hydrogen, CMB.Tech said.

The JV will expand to include an ammonia jetty and storage facility, “before scaling up hydrogen and ammonia production for export to South Africa and the EU, an investment estimated at €3 billion,” according to a recent statement by the European Commission.
