The company was granted €2.3 million ($2.49 million) funding last year from Finnish government-owned organisation Business Finland's grant funding to Green North Energy. The funding was granted to enable Green North Energy to design a hydrogen and ammonia production concept initially in Naantali in southwest Finland.

Green North Energy now plans to replicate this concept at two new sites in Pori and Kemi.

“The green ammonia that we are about to produce, will be compliant with the ammonia marine engines and fuel cells and can be used in the decarbonization of maritime,” Managing Director of Green North Energy Jussi Ylinen told ENGINE.

The selection of Pori and Kemi for these new plants aligns with the region's potential for offshore wind projects, ensuring access to renewable electricity crucial for hydrogen production. Additionally, their proximity to ports can facilitate the distribution of green ammonia to European markets.

The company has not confirmed how much hydrogen or green ammonia the facilities will produce.
