Greenergy extends Amsterdam biofuel plant lease by 10 years

British energy firm Greenergy has secured a 10-year lease extension with the Port of Amsterdam for its biofuels production plant.

The company acquired the site in 2018 and later converted it to produce waste-based biofuels. It further expanded the plant’s original capacity by 25% in 2024, to “process a broader range of waste oils,” though it has not disclosed the current output.

Greenergy said the lease extension reflects rising demand for low- and zero-emission potential fuels in the Netherlands, supported by the Dutch government’s “clear” policy measures to increase biofuel use.

This decision comes as Greenergy reviews its other assets.

Last month, it launched a consultation to cease production at its biodiesel plant in Immingham on the UK’s east coast, citing sustained “market pressures” despite recent cost-cutting measures.

“In contrast to neighbouring countries, the Dutch Government has committed to significantly increase the maximum amount of biofuels that can be blended with diesel and petrol in the coming years,” Adam Traeger, chief executive of Greenergy said.

“Where we see the necessary policy certainty, we are prepared to invest,” Traeger added.
