One of the two plants will process "end-of-life tyres" into recovered carbon black, and to low-carbon road and bunker fuels as a part of GTT’s project, the company said.

GTT, a subsidiary of Greenergy, will produce biofuels from the used tyres using two techniques: pyrolysis and hydroprocessing.

While performing pyrolysis, the tyres are heated without oxygen. That way they don't combust, but rather decompose into gases and solid carbon. The gases are subsequently cooled down into more condensed oils, which are then hydro-processed to remove sulphur and other contaminants.

The resultant liquids are split into three categories, one of which is VLSFO for bunkering, the other two having diesel and naphtha properties, the company explains on its website.

GTT says it expects to commission the plant next year and start commercial production in 2026.

Greenergy's chief executive Christian Flach said, “The end-of-life tires projects are part of Greenergy’s strategy to support the UK’s energy transition through the production and distribution of waste-derived renewable products.”

The second plant will produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from waste oils.

Greenergy has a bunker supply network spanning several UK ports, including Thames Oilport, Cardiff, Eastham, Tyne, Grangemouth, Dublin and Foynes.

Earlier this month, Greenergy announced it has partnered with Danish physical supplier Bunker One and UK-based bunker trader Propeller Fuels to distribute and sell its bunker fuels in UK locations.
