GT Wings is developing a wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) for ships. The technology will use a combination of suction and blowing principles to harness wind energy for power generation, Jonny Gambell, technical sales lead at GT Wings told ENGINE.
The system will serve as auxiliary propulsion “to complement the use of bunker fuels, reducing main engine fuel consumption and associated carbon emissions,” Gambell added.
The pilot system is expected to be installed on a cargo vessel owned by UK-based shipping firm Carisbrooke Shipping by the end of this year.
