South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries has placed the order on behalf of an undisclosed European shipowner.
The tanks will have a capacity of 174,000 cbm each. They will be fitted with GTT’s Mark III Flex membrane containment system, which it explains as "a cryogenic liner used to contain liquefied gas at low temperatures during shipping, onshore and offshore storage, at atmospheric pressure.”
LNG demand has been gaining more and more traction as a way to transport and store natural gas for consumption across industries. Global LNG trade has been growing year-on-year, with imports rising from 387 million mt in 2021 to 409 million mt in 2022.
LNG carriers play a crucial role in transporting LNG to ports to meet both bunker demand, and the proportionally much greater demand from other sectors.
