Hafnia, a subsidiary of the BW Group, has partnered with French shipowner Socatra to order four dual-fuel tankers that can run on methanol. All four vessels will be chartered to the French energy company TotalEnergies for a multi-year period, the tanker company said in a statement.

Three of the four 49,800 dwt tankers will be delivered by 2025, and the fourth vessel will be delivered in 2026. The vessels are currently under construction at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), in China.

“The increasing momentum in green methanol-fuelled vessels highlights its ability as a cleaner marine fuel, with a future-proofed and proven net-zero pathway, furthering Hafnia’s ambitions in meeting the IMO’s 2050 [decarbonisation] targets,” the company said.

Last year, Hafnia took delivery of two in a series of four dual-fuel LNG tankers built by GSI. The remaining two vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2024.
