The Hagland Progress is the second hybrid-battery bulker to be launched in the series. The first - Hagland Pioneer - was delivered to the company in October last year.
Battery-hybrid propulsion systems can lower a vessel's emissions because they combine an internal combustion engine running on conventional oil-based fuels with an electric battery that is recharged during voyages. Excess energy is stored in batteries, which can provide extra power during periods of maximum power requirement or run the vessel fully in low-power situations.
“Compared to Hagland’s existing fleet, the vessels are expected to reduce CO2 emission by more than 30% and NOx emissions by 90-95% from delivery," the Norwegian firm says.
In 2021, Hagland entered a deal with Royal Bodewes for two 5,000 dwt battery-hybrid bulk carriers, before deciding to increase the order by one more last year.
The remaining vessel of the series is expected to be delivered by mid-2023.
