The 23,600 TEU containership, Manila Express, can run on both LNG and conventional marine fuels. The vessel will be deployed on the company's Far East service route, which starts from Ningbo in China. From Ningbo, the vessel will sail to Xiamen, Kaohsiung, Yantian, Singapore, Rotterdam and Hamburg. It will then sail to Antwerp, Southampton, Algeciras, Singapore, Yantian and Hong Kong.

The company took delivery of first vessel in the series, Berlin Express, in July this year.

Hapag-Lloyd expects delivery of rest of the vessels in the series between 2023 and 2024.

LNG has been gaining popularity among shipowners. The global LNG-fuelled fleet is currently made up of 420 vessels, with another 123 expected to join this year, classification society DNV data shows.

LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a greenhouse gas (GHG) compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
