South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has placed the order on behalf of an unnamed “European ship-owner.”

Each vessel will feature a 12,750-cbm capacity LNG fuel tank equipped with a membrane containment system.

This system features a cryogenic liner designed to store liquefied gas at extremely low temperatures and atmospheric pressure, whether at sea or on land, according to GTT.

The vessels are expected to be delivered between the second quarter of 2027 and the fourth quarter of 2028.

LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a GHG compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
