August 6, 2025

The Swedish port will provide up to 3.5 megawatts (MW) of shore power for feeder container ships.

The project will make Helsingborg the first port in Scandinavia to offer onshore power for container vessels, with the facility set to be commissioned in 2026.

Developed in collaboration with Actemium, an industrial solutions provider, the installation will have a capacity of up to 3.5 MW.

This is equivalent to the energy needed for a typical feeder container vessel, the port authority said in a statement.

The onshore power supply (OPS) system will be installed at the port's container terminal.

The project comes in response to a 2019 ruling by the Environmental Permit Authority, which mandated the port to enable shore power connections for container ships within seven years.

Shore power is increasingly being adopted by ports, especially in Europe, and allows ships to plug into land-based electricity sources instead of running diesel generators while berthed, thereby reducing local pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
