The dual-fuel methanol engine currently being developed by HHI will be suitable to power various types of vessels, including container feeders, tankers and bulk carriers.
Global classification societies including ABS, BV, DNV, NK, LR, RINA, and KR gave a nod to the type approval test (TAT) for this engine, the South Korean firm said.
A type approval test is conducted to validate the product design and includes prototype test performance for compliance with classification societies and flag administration authorities, according to RINA.
HHI is also developing a dual-fuel engine that can run on conventional marine fuels and ammonia. Testing for this engine is scheduled for the second half of this year.
