The 210,000-dwt bulk carrier, Mount Matterhorn, can run on both LNG and conventional marine fuels. It will be chartered out to an unnamed commodity trading house for a period of 32-38 months, with an option for 11-13 months extension.

The company took delivery of its fourth vessel of the series last month, following the delivery of the first three vessels in March.

“The Himalaya ships, which can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 43%, are prepared to meet and benefit from more environmental regulations coming into force,” Himalaya Shipping’s chief executive Herman Billung claims.

LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a greenhouse gas (GHG) compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
