Höegh bunkered 8,741 mt of biofuel blends across its fleet of 34 vessels in 2023, as outlined in its annual report. It represents an increase of 127% over the 3,858 mt of biofuel blends consumed in 2022.
In December last year, it announced a partnership with VARO to buy B100 biofuel derived from 100% hydrotreated vegetable oil for its vessels. However, the shipping firm has not yet disclosed the quantity of biofuel it has agreed to buy.
It also plans to introduce LNG into its fuel mix, followed by bio-LNG in the near future. Ammonia is expected to be part of its fuel mix from 2027.
Höegh Autoliners has ordered 12 ammonia-ready vessels. Ammonia-ready means that the vessels will not be capable of running on ammonia upon delivery, but that they will have space allocated onboard to install ammonia fuel tanks and engines in the future.
The company has partnered with “several key ammonia suppliers worldwide such as Sumitomo, North Ammonia” to source ammonia in the future. Japan’s Sumitomo and Hoegh plan to supply green and blue ammonia for bunkering in the ports of Singapore and Jacksonville from 2027. Norway-based North Ammonia will supply at least 100,000 mt/year of green ammonia to Höegh from 2030.
