Höegh LNG, Aker BP partner on carbon capture and storage in Europe

Norway-based marine engineering firm Höegh LNG will develop floating carbon dioxide (CO2) storage units (FCSU) to capture and purify CO2 from industrial sources in north-west Europe by 2030.

The FCSUs will then transport CO2 in liquefied form (LCO2) and inject it into subsea reservoirs for permanent storage. Transporting LCO2 at low pressure will ensure greater capacity and reduce transportation cost, Höegh LNG added.

Meanwhile, Norwegian oil producer, Aker BP will develop offshore injection facilities and select suitable subsea reservoirs within the Norwegian Continental Shelf for permanent CO2 storage.

“Such [floating storage] units will make it possible to offer cost efficient solutions also to smaller emitters that would otherwise not be able to develop solutions on their own,” Höegh LNG said.
