Horisont Energi, Koole Terminals to develop ammonia supply chain at Rotterdam port
Norwegian carbon tech company Horisont Energi and the Netherlands-based logistic player Koole Terminals will develop a low-carbon ammonia bunkering facility, import terminal and storage facility at the port of Rotterdam under an extension of their agreement signed last year.

They will also continue to work together to establish ammonia import terminals throughout Europe.
Barents Blue, located in Finnmark, Norway will produce "blue ammonia" based on natural gas from the Barents Sea and ship it to the terminal at the port of Rotterdam. The Barents Blue project is a joint cooperation between Horisont Energi, and oil and gas players Equinor and Vår Energi.
“Blue ammonia” is low-carbon ammonia produced by combining airborne nitrogen with “blue hydrogen” in the "Haber-Bosch" process.
“Blue hydrogen” is produced by steam methane reforming natural gas, with the capture and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2). According to Horisont Energi, the CO2 by-product of the production will be captured and permanently stored at the Polaris carbon storage facility in Finnmark.
“To serve the market with clean ammonia, we are eager to start the work to develop a full logistic value chain. This will ensure transport, receipt, and delivery of clean ammonia to different industries and to the markets in the years to come,” says Bjørgulf Haukelidsæter Eidesen, chief executive of Horisont Energi.
