Considering the growing interest of ship owners in alternative fuels such as methanol, ammonia and hydrogen, the municipality of Helgoland has commissioned this study.

In the future, hydrogen from the AquaPrimus project will be delivered to the island. The AquaPrimus project in the north of Helgoland aims to use renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen.

As one of its three lead projects, the study is funded by the German government's hydrogen project TransHyDe. These hydrogen lead projects focus on the research and development of new technologies to facilitate green hydrogen production, storage, and transport.

"Taking into account the good availability of green hydrogen in the area of the island, we would like to examine the extent to which Helgoland can also reliably provide a supply for ships calling there in the future," says Christoph Tewis, project manager for the TransHyDE project Helgoland.

The study will also evaluate the potential demand for alternative fuels from shipping in Helgoland.

In addition, it will investigate the logistics and investment requirements for developing the hydrogen bunker station.
