The hydrogen market is expected to grow significantly within the shipping industry, accelerated by stringent regulations, guidelines and initiatives to rein in greenhouse gas emissions, says Mitsui Transportation & Machinery’s general manager Kensuke Kubota.

Hyon and Mitsui will initially conduct a feasibility study covering various parameters including available hydrogen solutions, roll out plans, cost and technical specifications. The feasibility study is expected to be completed by end of this year.

Last month, Hyon announced a partnership with Gen2 Energy and ASCO Norway to develop a hydrogen hub for maritime transport in Nordland.

In this partnership, Hyon will develop bunker technologies for large vessels to enable faster refilling of fuel tanks with hydrogen, while logistics and materials management company ASCO will lead setting up processes and infrastructure for the project.

Hydrogen production and availability is believed to be vital to achieve the EU’s net zero-emission target by 2050. Major European ports and companies have already announced plans to create hydrogen supply chain networks.
