In November 2023, the IMO initiated the IMO CARES Maritime Technology Global Challenge to support the decarbonisation efforts in shipping and ports within specific regions. A total of 21 companies worldwide took part in the challenge.
A judging panel decided three key areas of focus - wind turbines, shore-to-ship power supply, and port call data sharing. These were chosen for further development into detailed technical proposals and potential demonstration in four target countries: Namibia, Mauritius, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Trinidad and Tobago.
The governments of these countries made the final decision on which solutions to pursue.
“Combating climate change through emission reduction requires dedicated effort at every port and for even the smallest vessels throughout the world,” IMO CARES project manager Anton Rhodes said.
The IMO CARES project is funded by Saudi Arabia.
