The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has called on developing nations to prepare their respective national action plans to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping.

“A National Action Plan (NAP) outlines a country's strategies to reduce GHG emissions from ships,” the IMO explains.

These NAPs can include revision in existing regional policies and regulations. They can also cover new policies to support maritime emission reduction by accelerating the development and use of low- and zero-emission marine fuels, implementing measures to reduce port emissions, and developing bunkering infrastructure for alternative fuels.

The shipping regulator has invited expressions of interest from developing countries for support to develop these NAPs.

The IMO will provide the eligible developing countries with technical support through its GreenVoyage2050 programme. “National Action Plans are essential for every country looking to tackle maritime GHG emissions effectively,” said Astrid Dispert, manager at GreenVoyage2050.
