The vessel, Seaways Endeavor, is the first in a series of three new dual-fuel LNG VLCCs being built by South Korean shipbuilder DSME. The remaining two vessels are expected to be delivered in the coming months.
Upon delivery, all three VLCCs will be managed by UK-based ship management company V.Group and chartered to oil supermajor Shell for a period of seven years.
“This is an exciting step in our decarbonization journey,” said the company.
LNG has been widely pushed as near-term alternative fuel among shipowners to reduce emissions.
Classification society DNV’s data shows that the number of LNG-powered vessels in operation or on order has gone up by 189 since last year, to 543 this year.
LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a GHG compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
