Japanese engineering firm Izumi Steel Works will install a specialised ammonia storage tank on the vessel. Itochu has not yet disclosed further details, such as whether the vessel will also be powered by ammonia.
Sasaki Shipbuilding is expected to deliver the vessel by 2027. It will then be time-chartered to Itochu’s bunkering arm, Zeta Bunkering, to pilot ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering operations in Singapore that same year.
Itochu plans to commercialise ammonia bunkering in Singapore first, before expanding similar models in Japan, Egypt near the Suez Canal and Spain around the Strait of Gibraltar.
