The RoRo vessels will be able to run on methanol and conventional marine fuels.
The two ships will be constructed at the Enoura Plant of MHI's Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The vessels are expected to be delivered by the end of 2027.
Methanol-fueled RoRo ships are already in use as ocean-going vessels globally, but this marks the first time they are being constructed for coastal service in Japan, MHI says.
