K Line said it has established a system for “certifying the amount of CO2 reduction from marine biofuels and issuing certificates,” in association with the Japan-based classification society ClassNK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai).
The shipping company said it carried out a test operation in one of its supramax bulk carriers Albion Bay using marine biofuels in 2022. Japanese steel manufacturer JFE Steel Corporation and heavy industry conglomerate Sumitomo Corporation were also involved in the test operations.
Following the completion of the test operation, the shipping company has now quantified the “amount of CO2 reduction (heavy oil comparison) achieved during this test operation and issued a certificate,” it added.
